LifeVest Saved Phoenix Man's Life Twice

Gary Devol explains how the LifeVest wearable defibrillator saved his life twiceGary Devol, age 69 of Phoenix, AZ, was prescribed LifeVest for protection from sudden cardiac death after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy.

LifeVest is a vital part of treatment for patients with certain heart conditions, explained Dr. Mayur Bhatka, one of the cardiologists involved in Gary’s care at HonorHealth Heart Group in Phoenix.

“It’s a temporary guardian angel to these patients while their heart is recovering,” said Dr. Bhatka.

Six weeks after he was prescribed LifeVest, Gary suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the middle of the night. He was treated by LifeVest and regained consciousness immediately afterward. He continued to wear LifeVest for protection.

Two days later, while attending a convention at Chase Field, Gary experienced SCA again. Within one minute, LifeVest delivered a treatment shock that saved Gary’s life for a second time. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later received an ICD for long-term protection.

Gary is grateful he was wearing LifeVest. “I’m alive today because of it,” said Gary.
